About the Conference..

The McGill Engineering Investment Group is proud to announce that it will be hosting its first Financial Technology conference!

The Future of Fintech will bring industry leaders, flourishing startups and students together for a full day to discuss the impact of the emerging field on the future of banking and financial services.

The event will provide ample opportunities for networking with Montreal’s Fintech ecosystem through a light breakfast and a cocktail bookending the day.

In between, panel discussions and keynote speeches will provide invaluable insight on the current outlook for the rising industry and its future prospects

Sasha Lucioni
Research Scientist, Morgan Stanley
Sasha is a Research Scientist in the MSML (Morgan Stanley Machine Learning) team and part of the Morgan Stanley Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence. She has a PhD in Cognitive Computing and a background in Linguistics and Machine Learning. Sasha is interested in both applied and theoretical research in various domains, including Natural Language Processing, Educational Technologies, and Cognitive Science. She is a mother of two daughters, Thaïs and Zoé, and strives to actively promote the role of women in STEM both at home and at work.
Chadid Habib
Executive VP & CIO, Desjardins
Chadi Habib is the Executive Vice President Information Technology at Desjardins Group. Consisting of nearly 4000 technology professionals, his organization is accountable for all technology solutions and operations to the banking and insurance sectors of the group. He assumes the coleadership of the digital transformation initiated by Desjardins Group, an important shift which aims to enhance all services offered to Desjardins’ 7 million members and clients. Prior to coming to Desjardins in 2011, Chadi has held various executive positions in the United States and in Europe. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business.
David Mastroberardino
Product Vision, Croesus
With more than 16 years of experience in the financial services industry, David Mastroberardino is the driving force behind the product vision at Croesus. By working with a talented team to deliver the product development plan, David ensures that the company maintains its competitive edge and its position as a leading Fintech provider. David graduated from Concordia University with a specialization in Finance in 2001. In 2004, he obtained his CFA designation, followed by the CIPM certification in 2008. He is a member of CFA Montréal and participates on several industry groups, such as the IIAC Fintech Working Group. Over the years, David has also been invited to share his thoughts on several panels for various industry events. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife and his young daughter and is also an avid drummer.
Alexander Karabatsos
Managing Partner, Diorasi
With a background in financial analysis and strategic asset management, Alexander brings more than thirteen years of experience in investment management and trading operations that spans from algorithmic high frequency trading to financial engineering and risk management system design. His work experience and curious mind has led him to create a holistic view of global markets, enabling him to offer strategic insight towards and within alternative asset classes. His most recent creation is a tool that helps investors remove decision fatigue and cognitive biases while they discover their personal optimal crypto asset allocation. As a CFA charter holder, Alexander abides by the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and professionalism in the finance industry. His past management experience spans from TMX and various boutique trading firms as a trading supervisor.
Sam Kawtharani
CEO, Corl
Sam is the Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Corl. He has close to a decade of experience in leading the creation of FinTech products and solutions in the payments and lending industry from startup to IPO. He was previously Head of Product at IOU Financial, a publicly-listed online lender (TSX:IOU) , and is currently an advisor at Lend Mart and Fundica, both privately-held Canadian financial services companies. Sam is also an advisor at Trusted In Trading, a privately-held UK financial services company.
Phil Barrar
Founder and CEO, Mylo
Phil Barrar is on a mission to help Canadians achieve their financial goals with Mylo, the app that rounds up your purchases and invests the spare change. Phil launched Mylo in July 2017 and it has already been downloaded by over 250,000 Canadians who are looking for an easier way to save and invest, many for the first time in their lives. To date, Phil has acquired an asset management firm with $120M in AUM and raised $3.9M, most notably from Desjardins Capital.
Julien Cousineau
Founder and CTO, Flinks
Julien Cousineau is founder and CTO of Flinks, the leader in financial data in Canada. Before launching Flinks, he was a senior tech consultant for Desjardins. He also co-founded a tech startup in the aggregation of data in the music industry where he built technologies that scraped thousands of data sources daily. Julien has a very broad set of skills, from purely technical capacities to finance, sales & marketing, management and leadership. He has worked on both small and large transactional systems, and has lead both small and large technical teams. He is the main technical architect of what is today the most proficient financial data aggregation gateway in the world. His technological successes can be explained by his ability to attract top technical talents, his unconventional thinking, and his result-oriented mindset. Outside of Flinks, he enjoys discovering new places and cultures, having today travelled to over 50 countries.
Nicolas Synnott
Co-Founder, Front Row Venture Capital
One of the three co-founders of Front Row Ventures, Canada’s first student-led venture capital fund, Nicolas is driven by people and impact. Profound empathy, critical thinking, pragmatism, and bias for action are his favorite tools. Currently studying International Studies, he’s in charge of Front Row Ventures’ culture and community-building efforts. He discovered Montreal’s dynamic startup community and its undeniable impact on the metropolis while managing business development at La Gare, one of Montréal’s most prominent coworking spaces. Unapologetically dedicated to his community and the people surrounding him, he cherishes diversity profoundly and there’s no diverging positions he can’t bring to compromise around a common vision
Laviva Mazhar
Investment Analysis, Luge Capital
Laviva is an investment analyst at Luge Capital, a venture capital firm focused on early-stage fintech companies and AI solutions applied to financial services. Laviva spends her time sourcing fintech startups, performing due diligence and supporting portfolio companies. Previously, she was an analyst at Ferst Capital Partners (FCP), a fintech focused investment firm and startup foundry. At FCP, she spent her time helping build portfolio companies and supporting their fundraising processes and operations, bringing new investment opportunities and developing the firm’s brand in the startup ecosystem.
Marko Jelavic
Associate, Ferst Capital Partners
Marko is an Associate with Ferst Capital Partners (FCP), an investment firm providing strategic capital and support to early-stage FinTech startups. He works closely with FCP’s portfolio companies and supports the firm’s investment strategy across Canada. Marko has experience in venture capital and startup operation across the financial, technology and health industries. He is very active within the startup community and represents FCP at panels and pitch competitions. Marko holds an M.B.A. from HEC Paris and a B.Sc. from McGill University. Aside from entrepreneurship, he has a passion for sports, history and travel.
Jan Christopher
Founder, FormFintech
Jan is a fintech evangelist, passionate about improving society through finance and technology. He founded FormFintech that supports or has formed over 100 fintech startups. Prior to this, he worked as Head of Finance at District 3, helping 20 early stage teams raise more than $15 million, and was Head of Finance at bus.com, helping it from incorporation to Series A. He also worked as a consultant for billion dollar infrastructure projects on behalf of banks. He holds an MBA from HEC, a finance degree from Ottawa University, and passed II levels of the CFA.
Andre Mass
Investment Analyst, Portag3 Ventures
Andre is an Investment Analyst at Portag3 Ventures. Prior to joining Portag3, Andre worked as an Associate at the Boston Consulting Group in Montreal, where he helped develop digital strategy in the Retail sector and worked in the Technology and Telecommunications practice on pricing & promo analysis. Prior to that, he interned in Sales & Trading with National Bank of Canada’s Structured Products team and in Statistics at SOM Surveys & Studies. Andre is the recipient of a B.B.A. in Finance from HEC Montreal (Honour Roll).
Dave Fortin

Dave Fortin is Chief Operating Officer, Chief Compliance Officer and Portfolio Manager with Tactex Asset Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mylo. Austin Hubbell
CEO, Consillium Crypto
Austin is the CEO and co-founder of Consilium Crypto, a big data company that's bringing institutional-quality analytics to digital asset markets. With a focus in software architecture and machine learning, as well as previous tech startup experience, Austin brings a skillset balanced between the technology and business worlds. He previously worked with a distributed team based in L.A./San Francisco to build predictive models for crime hotspotting in major US cities, before transferring to the FinTech world to build machine learning based trading systems for the traditional currency markets.
Jean Amouyi
Founder, Shakepay
Jean Amiouny is CEO of Shakepay, the easiest way for Canadians to buy/sell bitcoin and pay their friends. He's a Next 36 Canadian entrepreneur, guest lecturer at McGill's Faculties of Law and Management, and an engineer from McGill University.
Julien Brault
Business Reporter, Les Affaires
Julien Brault has been popularizing finance for years as a business reporter at Les Affaires prior to founding Hardbacon. He is an author and a bookworm: he founded a non-fiction publishing house which he sold in 2010. When he’s not working to improve capitalism, he’s still working to improve capitalism.
Guillame Chabot
As part of Front Row’s investment team, Guillaume is passionate about Fintech. He is also a VC analyst at Odysseus Alternative Ventures, a European fund investing in early-stage Fintech, Insurtech, Proptech and Wealthtech startups. His previous experience include an incubation program at the District 3 Innovation Center to develop the roots of a Fintech, and an internship at Valtech Canada in the digital banking transformation consulting team. Active member in the community, Guillaume was in the organizing team of the Startup Open House 2017 gathering 10,000+ participants and 600+ startups across Canada. As a global citizen rooted in three cultures Canadian, French, and Vietnamese, Guillaume was fortunate to spend a semester in Hong Kong and work alongside with local key Fintech players. He is driven by meeting new people as well as talking about new ideas that can challenge the status quo. In the near future, he will work as a venture capitalist to help bright and audacious entrepreneurs willing to change the world with new ideas involving emerging technologies. Guillaume is currently in his final-year of his Bachelor’s degree where he is pursuing a major in Corporate Finance at HEC Montréal and a minor in Entrepreneurship at McGill.
Vincent Gauthier
I'm an independent Bitcoin / 'Blockchain' consultant and entrepreneur with almost a decade of experience in computer science, consulting and entrepreneurship. I’m doing due diligence, consulting, and analysis on Bitcoin and blockchain projects. Likewise I help companies build use cases, prototypes and team on bitcoin and related technologies. I’m the co-founder of Catallaxy, a center of expertise and consulting firm specialized in Bitcoin, crypto and "blockchain". I’m also the founder of TrustMaker. This project leverages some interested features of immutable public blockchain technologies(Bitcoin) for application in transparency, traceability, certification and supply chain. I’m running Blockchain Montreal. Blockchain Montreal organizes events, workshops and activities. It also connects with industries, universities and key players in the Montreal area and aims to assure a place of choice for Quebec in the upcoming bitcoin revolution. I'm advisor for the Holt Accelerator. I’m also the blockchain specialist on the FormFintech project and help build teams around emerging technologies and corporate needs. I discovered bitcoin years ago and have since been passionate about it. I have studied and worked on many of its aspects (computer science, game theory, money, economic).
